BRASILIA – The Amazon deforested area in July reached a total area of 2,254 km². This is equivalent to more than a third of all deforested volume in the last 12 months, between August 2018 and July 2019, during which time the total deforestation volume reached 6,833 km².
The data are from the Real Time Legal Amazon Deforestation Detection System (Deter), a tool of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) that oversees deforestation actions. The volume of 6,833 km² between August 2018 and July 2019 exceeds by 33% the deforestation measured in the previous 12 months.
To avoid distortions, these numbers consider only the three categories of vegetation cut that the government itself identifies as effective deforestation: deforestation with exposed soil, deforestation with vegetation, and mining.
If only July deforestation is observed this year, the volume reached 2,254.8 km² of devastation, a 278% higher volume than in July 2018, when 596.6 km² of deforestation was recorded.
Since May, the government has been denying Inpe’s official data, when the stateannounced that the worst deforestation rates in the last decade, with an average of 19 hectares of cleared vegetation per hour , the government began to confront official information, placing check the data that is released by the public sector itself.
The disclosure of this information has deeply disturbed the government. President Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) considered lying data released by Inpe about the increase of deforestation in the Amazon. Last Friday, 2, he exonerated Ricardo Galvão from the head of the organ.
Air Force reserve colonel Darcton Policarpo Damião was chosen to take over the command of Inpe . The new sitting director will only be chosen from a threefold list that will be set up by committee. On Tuesday, 06, the Minister of Science and Technology, Innovation and Communication, Marcos Pontes, said he will hold the new director of Inpe, even if the data produced by the agency on deforestation are confirmed.
